World Cup Nostalgia as Nigerians Celebrate Gernot Rohr’s 65th Birthday

Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr celebrates his 65th birthday today, two days after the Super Eagles got booted out of the 2018 Fifa World Cup.

The affable German coach has been a great stabilising influence since assuming the job in 2016, and the fact is not lost on Nigerians who wished him well on his special day.

Brought in to steady the ship after the disastrous stint of erstwhile coach Sunday Oliseh, Rohr not only qualified the Eagles for her sixth World Cup, but has built a vibrant young team that could morph into a force on the continent and beyond in the years to come.

Though the Eagles failed to get beyond the group stages of the World Cup, their performance wasn’t without merit, and the German coach has asked to stay on the job to build on the gains of the past year.

On the occasion of his 65th birthday, the Nigeria Football Federation took to Twitter to wish him well, sharing pictures of a cake and bouquet of flowers as he and his family celebrated.

And Nigerians have joined in the felicitations, albeit with fresh memories of the Mundial.

Here are some of the messages on Twitter…

And from us at, we say happy birthday, Mien Herr!
