A goal in either half from Rafael Varane and Antoine Griezmann gave France a 2-0 win over Uruguay to send them into the semifinal of the 2018 World Cup.
It’s a sixth semifinal appearance for Les Blues who now await the winner of tonight’s quarterfinal clash between Brazil and Belgium.
After a tight opening to the match at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Varane shot the French ahead five minutes before half-time when he rose highest to meet Griezmann’s deliciously whipped free-kick with a thumping header.
Uruguay threatened to get the leveller with a header of theirs, but Martin Caceres was denied by a fully stretched Hugo Lloris.
The game was put to bed on the hour mark when Griezmann’s shot was bundled into his own net by Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.
Griezmann’s strike took the wind off Uruguay’s sails, and France comfortably held on for a place in the last four.
