England have booked their place in the semifinal of the 2018 World Cup with a routine 2-0 win over Sweden at the Samara Stadium Saturday.
It’s a first semifinal appearance at the World Cup for England since losing to Germany in Italia 1990, as they now wait to take on the winners of tonight’s quarterfinal fixture between hosts Russia and Croatia.
Saturday’s victory was without the drama and excitement of the win over Colombia in the last 16, as Gareth Southgate’s young team excelled where more experienced sides have failed.
There was little doubt about the outcome when Harry Maguire nodded England in front on the half-hour mark, and the game was over as a contest when Dele Alli doubled their lead with a back-post header in the second-half.
Jordan Pickford continued his excellent form to deny Sweden at the other end, first with a diving save to stop Marcus Berg’s header, before pulling off a brilliant double save in the dying minutes to record England’s first clean sheet of the tournament.
