Nigeria got some consolation after Ahmed Musa’s second goal against Iceland at the just concluded 2018 Fifa World Cup has been shortlisted for the Goal of the Tournament award.
Making the announcement Monday, world football governing body Fifa said Musa’s spectacular strike – his first in a 2-0 win – is one of the 18 goals shortlisted out of the 169 in the Russian Mundial.
The pacy striker scored the classy goal in the 75th minute from a controlled cross down the right from wing-back Victor Moses.
Musa outpaced Iceland’s Kari Arnason before bringing the ball down with a velvet touch and burying down the middle of the goal with Iceland goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson sprawled helplessly on the turf.
Other contenders on the list are Lionel Messi’s superb individual goal against Nigeria and Cristiano Ronaldo’s free-kick goal in a spectacular 3-3- draw against Spain.
The poll presented by Hyundai will be open for a week till Monday, July 23, 2018.
Bayern Munich’s James Rodriguez won the award at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for his sizzling volley in a 2-0 win over Uruguay in the last 16.
