The biggest names in world football will be rewarded tonight at a glittering ceremony in Milan’s Teatro alla Scala for The Best Fifa Football Awards.
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk pipped heavyweights Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to the Uefa player of the year award last month.
But it remains to be seen if the towering Dutchman could make it a double award swoop when Fifa announces its 2019 winners tonight.
Van Dijk shot to global prominence by inspiring Liverpool to a sixth Champions League crown in June.
The 28-year-old Dutchman was an imposing presence at the back as Jurgen Klopp’s men bossed the continent and gave Manchester City a very close title challenge.
Messi, as always, was the mastermind of Barcelona’s defence of their title, while also powering the Catalans to the Champions League semifinals – where they fell to Van Dijk’s Liverpool.
The Argentine magician would also lose in the final of the Copa del Rey to Valencia – but he had a stellar season on an individual level as he secured a record extending sixth European shoe in addition to finishing as Champions League top scorer.
Ronaldo, who completed a $100m switch to Juventus last summer, top scored as they won a record eighth straight Serie A title.
He scored a hat-trick in the memorable Champions League comeback against Atletico Madrid in the last 16, but couldn’t power the Italians past Ajax in the last eight.
The five-time Fifa Player of the Year however had greater success on the international stage as Portugal won the inaugural Uefa Nations League trophy.
The ceremony begins at 7:30pm BST in Milan.
