Rasheedat Ajibade’s 36th minute strike proved to be the difference as the Falconets earn their first points at the event holding in France.
The result lifts the two-time finalists off the foot of the table after their opening day 1-0 reverse to three-time champions Germany.
Nigeria will progress into the knockout rounds by avoiding defeat in the final round of games against China Monday, after the Asians were downed 2-0 by Germany who have now advanced from the group.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Spain join Germany in the knockout rounds with a 1-0 win over Japan, while Ghana were eliminated after losing 4-0 to the Netherlands – their second straight defeat.
