A number of soldiers and policemen were among the people killed by suspected bandits along Kaduna-Abuja road on Sunday.
Sadiya Idris, a professor at the University of Abuja, was also killed while several others, including the orderly of the army officer, reportedly sustained injuries from gunshots as the suspects robbed and abducted many people near Gidan Busa village on the highway.
The incident reportedly took place around 7pm and lasted for at least an hour, with the attackers said to be numbering about 10.
Eyewitnesses said they had sophisticated weapons, and policemen at a nearby checkpoint were alerted but could do little to contain the mayhem.
This follows brutal attacks on the busy road that have forced many people traveling to and from Kaduna to use the train services instead.
A special police security task force was deployed to strategic points on the highway, but it has been of little effect as the bandits have continued to operate unhindered.
The Kaduna State police command has yet to comment on this latest security setback.
