Ronaldo hits Treble in Real Rout; Atleti cut gap on Barca

Cristiano Ronaldo netted a hat-trick as Real Madrid warmed for the Champions League tie with PSG with a 5-1 thrashing of Real Sociedad in La Liga on Saturday.

The victory over Sociedad took Real third in La Liga as they pick form in time for their blockbuster European clash with Neymar and co at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Zinedine Zidane started Lucas Vazquez ahead of Gareth Bale and the Spanish winger took full advantage when he headed home Ronaldo’s cross after 49 seconds.

Karim Benzema rattled the post with a low effort as he failed to break his scoring drought, but Real doubled their advantage 27 minutes later when a brilliant turn by Asensio unlocked Sociedad’s defence and Marcelo teed up Ronaldo to slam home from close range.

Toni Kroos curled home the third from outside the area and Ronaldo headed home Luka Modric’s corner in a dizzying four-minute spell before the break.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner completed his treble after Geronimo Rulli parried substitute Bale’s long-range effort, before Jon Bautista and Asier Illaramendi netted consolation goals for Real Sociedad.

Elsewhere, Antoine Griezmann betted the winner as second-placed Atletico edged Malaga 1-0 at the Rosaleda to cut the Barcelona’s lead to nine points.

Table-toppers Barca take on Getafe at the Campo Nou later today.
