The House of Representatives on Thursday endorsed June 12 as the new Democracy Day in Nigeria.
The lawmakers gave the endorsement after the consideration of a bill seeking to amend the public holidays’ act.
The amendment was necessitated after President Muhammadu Buhari in a national broadcast earlier this year declared June 12 as the new date for Democracy Day to honour Moshood Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 presidential election.
In a move that was widely applauded across the country, the president also conferred the highest honour in the land, Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) on the late business mogul-turned politician.
