The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Gboyega Oyetola emerged winner of the Osun State governorship election after Thursday’s rerun in seven polling units.
But his champagne may remain on ice as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Senator Ademola Adeleke described the rerun as a coup and vowed to challenge the outcome of the election at the courts.
The contentious poll was marred by violence with cases of attacks by thugs loyal to the APC in all the seven polling centres in Ife North, Ife South, Orolu and Osogbo Local Government areas.
Election observers and journalists were also harassed by the hoodlums while many were prevented from voting.
The results announced by INEC officials showed that in Ife South Osi Ward 8 PU10, APC had 172 while PDP had 21; in Ife North, Ward 10, PU2; APC had 126 while PDP had 2; in Osogbo Ataoja Ward 05 PU 017, APC had 299 while PDP has 165; in Orolu Ward 08 PU001, APC had 111 while PDP had 3; in Ife South, Olode Ward 07, PU12, APC had 283 while PDP had 15; in Orolu Ward, 08 PU004, APC had 198 while PDP had 15; in Orolu Ward 09 PU 003, APC had 41 while PDP had 64. This brings the tally for APC to 1,160 and PDP 325 in the rerun.
The PDP earlier led with 353 votes from Saturday’s election, and had asked INEC to declare its candidate the winner.
The party vowed to challenge the outcome of the election, saying it must reclaim its stolen mandate.
