Oprah Winfrey’s Mother, Vernita Lee, Dies at 83

TMZ is reporting that Oprah Winfrey’s mother, Vernita Lee, is dead.

According to the media house, this as confirmed by Oprah’s niece, Alisha Hayes, who revealed that Vernita died on Thanksgiving Day. The family just confirmed the death.

Vernita, born in 1935 in Mississippi, married Vernon Winfrey and gave birth to the legendary TV star Oprah in 1954, who was raised by her grandmother because Vernita moved to Milwaukee where she worked as a housemaid.

Oprah moved to Milwaukee to live with her mom at the age of six, and they both suffered a rocky relationship because of the lack of bonding. “I was asking the question … what is a mother? What are you supposed to feel about your mother?” Oprah once said in an interview.

Sadly, it was while she was living with her mother that she got molested by her cousin and abused by an uncle.

Vernita had another child in 1963 and gave her up for adoption, and Oprah eventually met her half-sister Patricia until 2010.

Vernita Lee was 83.
