Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has surprisingly described erstwhile Arsenal Manager, Arsene Wenger, as one of the best managers in the history of football.
Mourinho, an archrival of Wenger, who sparked outrage by labelling him a ‘specialist in failure’ during their time as club managers in the English Premier League, was full of praises for the Frenchman as he received a lifetime achievement prize at the Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco, on Monday.
“There were some episodes along the road,” the 56-year-old Portuguese said.
“I can only speak by myself. I really enjoyed the competition. But the real respect was always there.
“He made lots of history in that football club. The nickname is there – the ‘Invincibles.’ Amazing. A coaching philosophy, the almost perfect team. He is one of the best football managers in the history of football.”
Wenger left Arsenal at the end of last season after managing the English club for 22 years and won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.
The peak of his career was leading the Gunners to a historic unbeaten Premier League season as they won the title in 2004.
As for Mourinho’s praise…who said old dogs can’t learn new tricks?
