#OccupyLekkiTollGate: Mayhem as Lagosians Protest Hike in Toll Rates

There’s pandemonium on the streets of Lagos as protesters storm Lekki in strong disapproval of the recent hike in toll rates.

In the wake of the upward review of toll rates at the Admiralty Circle Plaza and Lekki-Ikoyi link bridge, there’d been warnings of a shutdown of Lekki phase 1 roundabout on Friday February 9 from 7am.

The protesters had slammed the insensitivity of the Lagos State Government to the plight of the people, saying rather the rates should be reviewed downward.

And on Friday, a week after the new rate regime, protesters marched through Admiralty Way and turned in front of Domino’s Pizza to head for the Admiralty Circle Toll Plaza for the main protest.

The protest was however marred by low turnout and the presence of paid hoodlums who had a field day harassing the crowd in spite of heavy police presence.

The crowd was undeterred though, carrying placards with inscriptions like: “Say No to Lekki toll hike”, “Switch off your ignition”, “Ambode save our souls”, among others, while others chanted slogans such as “Toll gate is a fraud” and “We want no toll” as music of the late afro-beat legend and social critic Fela Anikulapo Kuti played in the background.

Meanwhile, the protest has gotten mixed reactions, with as some slamming the police for allowing the hoodlums run riot, while others call for a repeat march Saturday to interrupt the scheduled Lagos marathon in a bid to get more attention.
