Nigerians React as Super Eagles bow out of World Cup

The Super Eagles of Nigeria on Tuesday bowed out of the 2018 Fifa World Cup following a 2-1 defeat to Argentina.

Nigeria came into the match needing to avoid the loss, but went out in heart-breaking fashion after a late goal from Marcos Rojo.

On a festive night in St Petersburg, Lionel Messi had opened his account in the tournament with a beautifully taken goal.

But the Eagles drew level shortly after the start of the second half when Victor Moses converted from the spot after an infringement during a corner.

It wasn’t to be Nigeria’s night however, as they conceded what proved to be the winner four minutes from time when Rojo smashed home a teasing cross from the right.

The defeat sees Nigeria become Africa’s fourth team to be eliminated from the Mundial, leaving Senegal as the only team flying the flag for the continent.

Nigeria’s rather premature exit from the Mundial has sparked reactions in the football-crazy country where expectations were high coming into the tournament.

Here are some of the best reactions on Twitter…

For Senator Ben-Murray Bruce, it was time for a political statement.

Nollywood star Uche Jombo thinks the coach was at fault for not acting in time

A die-hard Eagles fan, Uncle Uni, laid the blame at the foot of Fifa.

One Obasinga thinks the referee was made an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Despite the heartbreak, some fans brought humour to the occasion.

And of course, there’s no way striker Jude Ighalo would be forgiven.
