Nigerians call for removal of health minister Osagie Ehanire for admitting ‘ignorance of plight of health workers’

Nigeria’s Minister of Health Dr Osagie Ehanire is under fire for his position on the plight of health workers amid the ravages of coronavirus in the country.

Presently, a petition calling for the removal of Dr Ehanire, a leader of the presidential task force on COVID-19, is going round on social media after his appearance at the national Assembly.

Reacting to claims by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) that doctors battling against COVID-19 in the country were being paid N5,000 as health hazard, the House of Representatives invited the presidential task force before it.

During the seating, House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila asked the health minister about outrageous the claim by NARD, to which he responded by saying he wasn’t aware they were being paid such allowances.

He stated further that temperature checks and other treatment carried out on victims was part of the “standard job they do everyday”.

A stunned Gbajabiamola berated the health minister for ‘dropping the ball’ with his response, and called for more detailed briefing from the task force.

This also comes as Ghana, Nigeria’s West African neighbours have taken lofty measures to ensure safety of their health workers including par rise and tax cuts.

Expectedly, this hasn’t gone down well with Nigerians on social media, with many calling for the immediate removal of the ‘aloof’ minister.
