Nigeria U17 team failed to qualify for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time after they lost on the away goals rule to Cameroon on Sunday.
The Flamingos forced their archrivals to a 1-1 draw in the return leg in the Cameroonian capital Yaounde after the first leg ended in a 2-2 draw.
It’s a major upset for Nigeria which has featured in all five U17 Women’s World Cups since the inaugural edition in 2008.
Alice Kameni gave the home team the lead in the 16th minute, before substitute Martha Vincent drew the Flamingos level eight minutes from time. Nigeria rallied for the winner late on but the dogged hosts held on for a place in the finals which will be staged in Uruguay in November.
