Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state has reacted with irritation to the alleged plot to impeach him by some lawmakers in the state House of Assembly.
Ortom, who recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party, says he now knows why President Donald Trump said there are “shithole countries” in Africa following the impeachment attempt.
The embattled governor had used the controversial remark attributed to Trump when describing Africa earlier in the year, an allegation he denied.
Ortom said a situation where eight out of 30 lawmakers would attempt to impeach a sitting governor was only possible in a “shithole country”.
The governor said he was being targeted for ditching the APC for PDP.
He accused the inspector-general of police of perpetuating evil, appealing to President Muhammadu Buhari to his errant aides to order.
“Now I know why Trump called Nigeria a shithole country. It’s only in a shithole country that eight house of assembly members can suspend 22 lawmakers,” he said.
The governor also alleged that George Akume, a serving senator in the state and renowned political godfather, was behind the political crisis in Benue.
