Morocco Thrash Nigeria to win Chan 2018

Hosts Morocco cruised to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Nigeria in the final of the 2018 African Nations Championship at a packed and soggy Stade Mohamed V in Casablanca on Sunday.

The Atlas Lions join two-time winners DR Congo, Tunisia and Libya as the four countries to win Chan since its inception in 2009.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles completely capitulated after going down to 10 men for most of the second half, and their wait for Chan glory continues.

Morocco began the brighter side, and tournament top scorer Ayoub El Kaabi had a headed goal ruled out in the seventh minute after the ball was adjudged to have gone out of play in its flight.

El Kaabi was at it again eight minutes later, rattling Nigeria’s crossbar with an acrobatic effort as the hosts searched for the opener.

The Eagles threatened briefly as the half wore on, but Morocco soon shot ahead after a slick move put Abdeljalil Jbira free down the left flank, his brilliant pullback from the by-line swept home by Zakaria Hadraf.

It was downhill from then on for the Eagles as Eneji Moses got a second booking for hacking down Mohamed Nahiri shortly after the restart.

The Moroccans then made the most of their numerical advantage as Walid El Karti doubled their lead on the hour mark, before Hadraf notched his second on the night.

Top scorer El Kaabi grabbed a record ninth goal on the 73rd minute when he redirected a shot from Nahiri to complete a memorable night for the Atlas Lions.

Meanwhile, fans in Nigeria have been reacting to the way the cookie crumbled for the Eagles…
