Liverpool down Chelsea on Penalties to win Super Cup

Liverpool won the Uefa Super Cup by beating Chelsea 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in Istanbul.

Goalkeeper Adrian kept out Tammy Abraham’s weak spot kick to secure victory for the Champions League winners, who claim their fourth Super Cup trophy.

Frank Lampard’s men had taken the lead in the first half through Olivier Giroud’s clinical strike, but Sadio Mane scored twice – both from substitute Roberto Firmino assists – to give Liverpool the lead.

Jorginho converted coolly from the spot after substitute Tammy Abraham had been fouled to take the game to extra-time.

And after nine excellent spot-kicks, Abraham placed his shot too close to Adrian to hand Liverpool their first silverware of the season.

The win comes just two months after Jurgen Klopp won his first trophy as Liverpool boss when he led the Reds to a 2-0 win over Tottenham in the Champions League final.
