Just In: OPEC Re-elects Barkindo as Sec-Gen

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has announced the re-election of Nigeria’s Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo as Secretary General for a three-year tenure.

The announcement was made on Monday night at the end of the 176th meeting of OPEC member nations in Vienna, Austria.

A former Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, Barkindo was first elected as Secretary General of the cartel in 2016.

He has been faced with the pressure of maintaining prices amid dwindling demand for crude and the expansion of US shale.
