Jussie Smollett is under arrest and in the custody of the Chicago Police detectives.
This was confirmed by the Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi who tweeted Thursday morning, saying that Smollett “is under arrest and in custody of detectives,” and that the “police will brief reporters on the investigation prior to the defendant’s appearance in court.”
Reacting to the update, Smollett’s attorneys said they will “mount an aggressive defense” as the actor faces a felony charge of disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false report claiming he was a victim of a hate crime in Chicago.
Recall that Smollett reportedly filed the report with police on January 29, saying he was assaulted by two men, including one who was masked. They allegedly yelled racist and homophobic slurs, tied a rope around his neck and poured an unknown substance on him. At the time, police said they were treating the attack against the black and gay actor as a hate crime.
But it wasn’t long before evidence suggested that he paid two Nigerians to orchestrate the attack on himself.
Yesterday, he was officially charged with staging the assault. Now he is in police custody.
We can’t wait to see how this pans out.
