In a week of political drama in Nigeria, Senator Dino Melaye was unsurprisingly one of the main actors commanding the headlines.
The senator representing Kogi West in the National Assembly joined 14 others to defect from the ruling Al Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday, and two days later, news of his kidnap by unknown gunmen broke.
In a tweet by Senator Ben Murray-Bruce on Thursday, Melaye was reportedly waylaid at Gwagwalada as he made his way to Kogi for a court hearing.
According to Mr Bruce, he was informed of the development by the senator’s brother, Moses Melaye.
The timing of his abduction raised eyebrows as he was due at a Lokoja Magistrate Court where he’s facing a six-count charge of criminal conspiracy.
While the police launched an investigation into the matter despite not receiving a formal report of his kidnap from his family or friends, the embattled lawmaker resurfaced a day later, to the surprise of Nigerians.
Taking to his official Twitter handle, @dino_melaye, he thanked Nigerians for their love and prayers as he spent “11 hours in the wilderness”.
I thank God once again for escaping another dangerous attack. I also thank Nigerians for their prayers and show of Love. Spent 11 hours in the wilderness traumatized but God preserved me. God is the best and in whom ONLY I trust. They will continue to try. WE SHALL OVERCOME!!!

But the latest bit of theatrics from the rambunctious senator hasn’t gone down well with Nigerians, who have responded with sarcasm and in some cases disgust, on Twitter.
Here are some of the reactions of his followers…
Din Din Baba, I hail your JamesBondism

If @dino_melaye is truly smart, he would have distance himself from this childish political games he has been acting on. Our eyes have cleared since ‘Ajekun Iya ni yo je’ hit track.

it would be highly improper to say he is a disgrace to his Children and the entirety of the district he's representing.
