The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdul’aziz Yari, has described the freezing of Benue State accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as unconstitutional.
Governor Yari said this on Wednesday after a closed-door meeting with the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo in Abuja.
The EFCC on Wednesday froze the bank accounts of the Benue State government domiciled in three banks after investigations indicated alleged abuse of Benue State’s security funds.
Governor Samuel Ortom, reacting to the action taken by the anti-graft agency, described it as a political witch-hunt after he defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party.
The Governors’ Forum chairman not only described the move as wrong, it added that the state has suffered a backdrop of security challenges which has claimed the lives of many.
He then appealed to the Federal Government to address the situation which could further imperil the already besieged state.
