Ghana Fires VC of Kwame Nkrumah University

The Ghanaian government has sacked the Vice-Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Prof. Kwasi Obiri Dansom, following the recent students’ unrest and subsequent closure of the institution.

Prof Dansom was directed to hand over to the Pro Vice-chancellor of the University, Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson, with immediate effect.

Confirming the development, the Press Secretary to the Minister of Education, Mr. Rodney Nkrumah Boeteng, said “It is a government decision. The NCTE (National Council on Tertiary Education) merely communicated it.”

The university’s internal governing structure was also dismantled with the dissolution of the KNUST Administrative Council.

An interim committee was constituted to oversee the affairs of the institution, with representatives from the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and the Teachers and Education Workers’ Union (TEWU).

This comes as the KNUST lecturers embark on an in definite strike action to protest the government’s dissolution of the university’s governing council.

KNUST UTAG Vice-President, Professor Charles Marfo, described the action of government as arbitrary, because the local UTAG was not consulted before the decision was taken.

The institution, one of Ghana’s foremost, remains closed.
