Retired Lieutenant General Jeremiah Useni has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Plateau State.
The 75-year-old political veteran defeated twelve other contestants to clinch the slot after polling 1,018 votes as against 340 scored by Johnbull Shekarau – who came a distant second.
Useni, presently serving as a Senator representing Plateau South senatorial zone in the National Assembly, was once a Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Minister of Transport.
A close ally of the former military Head of State, Late Gen Sani Abacha, Useni also served as the military governor of the old Bendel State, now made up of Edo and Delta States, between 1984 and 1985.
He will go up against incumbent Governor Simon Lalong of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who also won the governorship primaries organised by his party, unopposed on Sunday.
