Chelsea beat United to win FA Cup

Eden Hazard scored a first-half penalty as Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 to win the FA Cup at a festive Wembley Saturday.

In a game of few clear cut chances, the Belgian playmaker twisted and tore past Phil Jones before drawing a clumsy foul from the United defender after 22 minutes.

He calmly picked himself up to slot past David de Gea in United goal to score what proved to be the winner.

The defeat leaves Jose Mourinho and Manchester United empty-handed this season, after they finished 19 points adrift of champions Manchester City in the Premier League.

United, with striker Romelu Lukaku only fit enough for a place on the bench, raised their game after the break – but lacked the cutting edge to seriously threaten a defensively well-organised Chelsea.

Alexis Sanchez had a goal ruled out for straying just offside, with referee Michael Oliver using VAR to confirm the call, and Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois came big with a succession of fine saves.

Club record signing Paul Pogba wasted their best chance late on when he headed wide of an open goal from a corner.

It is an eighth Cup victory for the Blues, and redemption after their painful loss to Arsenal in last season’s final.
