Breaking: Spain Names Fernando Hierro as World Cup Coach

In extraordinary circumstances leading up to the World Cup, the Spanish Football Federation has announced Fernando Hierro as their new coach after Julen Lopetegui was sacked earlier on Wednesday.

Hierro, who until now was the Sporting Director of Spanish Football Federation RFEF, will take charge of the senior side for their game against Portugal on Friday and for the remainder of the tournament, it has been revealed.

Lopetegui was sacked this morning, after RFEF chief Luis Rubiales was reportedly ‘furious’ having not been told that the 51-year-old was leaving to take charge of Real Madrid next season.

Announcing Lopetegui’s sacking back at the RFEF headquarters in Madrid, Rubiales said the manner of his assumption of the Madrid job could not be tolerated.

As such, the 50-year-old former Real Madrid midfielder will now have the honour of leading La Furia Roja at the Mundial in Russia.
