No fewer than 50 policemen have been deployed to the National Health Insurance Scheme headquarters in Abuja as crowds gather to protest.
Punch reports that some persons believed to be in support of the recently reinstated Executive Secretary of the NHIS boss, Prof. Usman Yusuf, are expected to hold a solidarity rally at the agency, and the police have been called in to prevent a clash with those opposed to Yusuf’s recall.
Despite being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for perpetrating fraud to the tune of N919m, Yusuf was controversially reinstated by President Muhammadu Buhari last week.
His shocking return prompted unionists at the agency to ground operations, threatening to stay of work until the action was reversed.
Speaking at the agency on Monday, the Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria at the NHIS, Mr. Razaq Omomeji, told members not to be intimidated.
According to Omomeji, the persons coming to protest were hired by Yusuf.
