Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has submitted his governorship nomination form at the headquarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Wednesday.
Ambode submitted the form 48 hours after he, alongside Obafemi Hamzat and Jide Sanwonolu, two APC chieftains in Lagos, picked up governorship forms at the APC secretariat.
This comes as the national leader of the APC and estranged godfather of Ambode, Bola Tinubu, is said to have given his blessings to Sanwonolu.
Reports are also swirling that there is a threat to impeach Ambode if he does not drop his second term bid, as over 50 council chairmen loyal to Tinubu reportedly met and pledged their support to Sanwonolu.
The council chairmen are the most influential grassroots mobilisers under the direct primary system adopted by APC to pick governorship candidates.
Sanwonolu also enjoys the support of Mandate Movement, a group fiercely loyal to Tinubu, TheCable writes.
At a meeting held after he picked up his nomination form, James Odunmbaku, an ally of Tinubu known as “Baba Eto” in the political circle, said “Sanwololu is the incoming governor of Lagos”, with the backing of the Godfather.
Ambode’s re-election bid was made more daunting after billionaire businessman Femi Otedola ‘accepted’ the request of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be their flagbearer in the 2019 poll.
