Mayhem hit the Federal capital Territory, Abuja, late Monday as seven policemen were killed and many civilians injured when gunmen opened fire on them.
The policemen were said to be on routine stop-and-search duty operation at Galadimawa roundabout, a suburb in Abuja, when the yet-to-be identified gunmen pumped bullets into them and other motorists and pedestrians.
A resident of the community who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the alleged armed men were stopped for search by the police when they opened fire on the policemen which led to the death of seven while one was seriously injured.
The ensuing gun battle led to many pedestrians and traders around the roundabout to scamper for safety, sustaining various degrees of injuries in the process.
As a result of the surprise attack, the FCT police command deployed more policemen to the community which is close to the ever busy Airport Road.
The Police in Abuja said investigations have begun and they were working to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book.
