Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr has handed a late call-up to Enyimba goalkeeper Theophilus Afelokhai as replacement for Francis Uzoho for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa and international friendly against Uganda this month.
Eagles no 1 Uzoho was forced to pull out of the Super Eagles squad after suffering an injury this past weekend which will keep him out of action for at least four weeks.
Afelokhai has now been drafted in as the number three goalkeeper for the crucial match against Bafana Bafana.
After weeks of debates over his continued snub by Nigeria’s handlers, the 30-year-old netminder now has a chance to make his competitive debut for the Super Eagles after close to three years in the international wilderness.
Afelokhai has been outstanding for Enyimba this season helping the two time CAF Champions League winners reach the semi-final of this year’s CAF Confederation Cup.
Nigeria will take on South Africa in Johannesburg on November 17 where a draw will be enough to secure a ticket for the 2019 Afcon holding in Cameroon.
The Eagles will then go up against the Cranes of Uganda in an international friendly three days later in Asaba.
The twenty three invited players are expected to start reporting to camp on Monday, November 12.
