Tottenham Hotspurs didn’t read the script as they ruined Alexis Sanchez’s Premier League debut with a 2-0 defeat of Manchester United Wednesday.
The build-up to the game was overshadowed by frantic transfer activities among the top guns, but Spurs kept their cool to end any lingering hopes United may have harboured of catching runaway leaders Manchester City, who beat West Brom 3-0.
Spurs caught the Red Devils cold at a packed Wembley, Christian Eriksen opening the scoring after 11 seconds following a long ball from inside the Tottenham half.
It was the first goal United have conceded in 2018 but despite some bright moments of their own they were 2-0 down just before the half-hour after Phil Jones lashed the ball into his own net.
Mourinho threw on Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini in the 63rd minute, and despite some openings, Spurs always looked a threat as they held on for the impressive win that puts them right back in the hunt for Champions League places.
A good night for Spurs got even better after stuttering champions Chelsea fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth, with goals from Callum Wilson, Junior Stanislas and Nathan Ake.
It was business as usual for City, who handed a debut to £57-million defender Aymeric Laporte at the Etihad.
Ppe Guardiola’s men struck through Fernandinho midway through the first half and doubled their lead through Kevin De Bruyne in the second half before Sergio Aguero struck late on to seal the three points and extend their lead to 15 points..
Elsewhere, Newcastle drew 1-1 with Burnley, Southampton drew 1-1 at home to Brighton while Stoke City played a goalless draw with Watford.
