Four people have been killed after a gunman opened fire at a Christian church in the Russian republic of Dagestan.
Four others were also injured in the shooting before regional police killed the assailant, Russia’s interior ministry said. Two police officers were among the wounded as authorities say the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
According to Russia’s Tass news Agency, an unknown shooter fired at people leaving an evening service in the city of Kizlyar, a town of about 50,000 people on the border with Chechnya.
Dagestan is a predominantly Muslim region between Chechnya and the Caspian Sea close to Georgia. Following two separatist wars in neighboring Chechnya, an Islamist insurgency has spread to Dagestan.
