Famed attorney, Mark Geragos filed a class action suit against Snapchat on Thursday, 07 July for exposing minors to “sexually offensive” material without warning, made available using its Discover feature.

The suit which was filed in California on behalf of a 14-year-old boy and his mother claims that Snapchat’s “Discover” routinely suggests sexually explicit content without a proper warning. This is according to US Weekly.

Court documents published by The Hollywood Reporter reads:

“[This is] an insidious pattern and practice of intentionally exposing minors to harmful, offensive, prurient and sexually offensive content, without warning minors or their parents that they would be exposed to such explicit content,”  “Millions of parents in the United States today are unaware that Snapchat is curating and publishing this profoundly sexual and offensive content to their children.”

An example of the offensive material is a piece from Buzzfeed  titled- “23 Pictures That Are Too Real If You’ve Ever Had Sex With a Penis.” The piece shows popular Disney characters associated with NSFW sexual acts and innuendo. Other raunchy materials are;  “10 Things He Thinks When He Can’t Make You Orgasm,” “People Share Their Secret Rules for Sex” and “I Got High, Blown, and Robbed When I Was a Pizza Delivery Guy.” The lawsuit  claims these materials are objectionable and in violation of the Communications Decency Act and is seeking a $50k penalty for each violation and an order forcing Snapchat to warn parents and minors of graphic content.

A spokesperson for Snapchat told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement that “we haven’t been served with a complaint in this lawsuit, but we are sorry if people were offended.”

The Snapchat spokesperson also noted that their “Discover” partners have editorial independence,
