Lionel Messi wins the Ballon d’Or

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has won the 2015 FIFA Ballon d’Or at a ceremony held in Zurich.

The 28-year-old Argentine was named the best footballer in the world for a record fifth time after guiding Barca to a five-trophy haul last year.

Messi, who curiously lost the Puskas award to Brazilian Wendell Lira, took a massive 41.33% of the total votes cast, with Real Madrid megastar Cristiano Ronaldo second with 27.76% votes while Messi’s Barca teammate Neymar came in third with 7.86% votes.

Barca’s coach Luis Enrique was named coach of the year ahead of Bayern Munich’s Pep Guardiola and Chile’s coach Jorge Sampaoli, while USA boss Jill Ellis won the women’s football coach of the year USWNT heroics in Canada last year.

Talismanic USA midfielder Carli Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final, won the women best footballer award ahead of Germany’s Celia Sasic and Aya Miyama of Japan.
