Presidency defends N3.8bn budget for Aso Rock clinic; to spend N200bn on federal hospitals

Mr Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity on Tuesday night dismissed claims that the federal government plans to spend more on the State House Clinic in Aso Rock than on all its teaching hospitals combined.

Shehu described the report titled ‘2016 Bugdet: Buhari to spend more on State House Clinic than on all federal teaching hospitals’ as being “simply off the mark and insensitive to government’s efforts to improve medical facilities at home in Nigeria.”

The presidential spokesman clarified that while the amount budgeted for the State House Clinic is N3.8 billion, records from the office of the director-general of the Budget Office indicate that at least N200bn is allocated to all the federal health institutions.

Shehu said the 17 tertiary hospitals would receive more than 50 per cent of the N200bn allocation and urged anyone interested in verifying the budget to do so.

According to the presidency, the State House Clinic does not serve the president’s personal health needs alone but is also open to government officials and other citizens within reach.

The presidential spokesman said further that the government hopes to discourage overseas trips for medical attention, which also affects the foreign exchange rate, by spending more on government health institutions.
